Avner Hershlag, M.D. decided to become a fertility specialist after witnessing a close family member struggle with infertility for more than a decade.  During his time at North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Human Reproduction in Manhasset, NY he has brought numerous innovative programs to the Center.  He serves as the Director of the Donor Egg and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) Programs, the Director of the Fertility Laboratories and the Medical Director of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Program. 

Dr. Hershlag is particularly interested in PGD, a cutting-edge technology that helps those with genetic disease conceive a healthy baby.  He is also passionate about the Center’s Donor Egg Program, which offers patients who struggle with reproductive aging the ability to extend their fertility and expand their families.

Dr. Hershlag is certified in both OB/GYN and Reproductive Endocrinology and holds academic appointments. He has authored more than fifty original papers, twenty-five book chapters as well as a recently published novel on genetics. Dr. Hershlag is actively engaged in multiple research projects on fertility.  He has received numerous awards, including multiple awards from The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), as well as the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO). 

Dr. Hershlag completed his undergraduate training in his native country, Israel, and graduated from the Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem. While in medical school, Dr. Hershlag was elected Director of Medical Education of the International Federation of Medical Students Society. Following three years of a General Surgery residency at Hadassah, Dr. Hershlag moved to the United States in 1984. Here, he completed his OB/GYN residency at the George Washington University Medical Center and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Yale University School of Medicine.
