Q&A With Dr. Shvetha Zarek from Sher Fertility St. Louis

Shvetha Zarek, MD, FACOG just recently joined the practice at Sher Fertility St. Louis. She took some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions to help patients get to know her a little better:

Why did you become a doctor?
Having grown up in a medical family, I was instilled with two fundamental tenets: the importance of service to others and the love of science. Practicing medicine fulfills both passions.

Why did you choose reproductive medicine?
I fell in love with the idea of helping families in such a profound manner by being part of the journey to have a child.

What excites/challenges you about this field?
The field is so new and we are learning more and more every day. There are not many fields of medicine that can say that!

What do you think is the most significant trend in reproductive medicine to follow in the next few years?
Unfortunately, pregnancy loss still affects up to 25% of families. That is a statistic that I am committed to improving. The ability to differentiate normal embryos will enhance our ability to decrease the chance of pregnancy loss.

What is the biggest challenge/most difficult aspect of the job?
I am acutely aware of the emotional and financial burden of the fertility process and I work very hard to mitigate these burdens for my patients.

What is the most rewarding?
Getting to meet the newest members of a family that we helped… it never gets old and is a ray of sunshine every time!

Why did you join the Sher Institute/Dr. Dayal?
I joined the Sher family because Dr. Sher and colleagues work very hard to provide the trifecta of reproductive medical care: a compassionate environment, cutting edge research, and an outstanding reputation of success. It helps that Dr. Dayal has been a mentor of mine for over 10 years!

How does being a mother impact how you interact with patients?
Being a parent and a specialist in reproductive medicine creates an amazing synergy that enhances every interaction with patients. I work very hard for my patients so they have the opportunity to experience the wonderful gift of parenthood. I work very hard at home for my children, not only to provide for them, but also to show them that they should be the best they can be to contribute to the world.
