Treatments & Options - LGBT - Success Rates
Gay men and women have great chances at pregnancy success, as long as there are no fertility problems. Below, we share success rates for gay men and women who choose to become parents through insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Lesbian pregnancies are common today. For a lesbian pregnancy, you will most likely undergo artificial insemination using donor sperm. Here are the success rates for intrauterine insemination (IUI) using donor sperm. IUI is a special form of insemination that takes place in a fertility clinic.
IUI success rates by number of cycles
- Women have an 86% chance of pregnancy with multiple IUI cycles
- You have a 10 to 20% chance of getting pregnant with one IUI cycle
IUI success rates by age
- Under 35: 10 to 20 % chance of IUI pregnancy success per cycle
- Between 35 and 40: 10 % chance of IUI pregnancy success per cycle
- Women 40 and above: 5 % chance of IUI pregnancy success per cycle
You may choose to do the insemination at home (some women use turkey basters) but success rates may improve if you choose IUI at a fertility clinic. If you choose insemination at home, artificial insemination success rates may range from 8 to 15 percent each month, so do not get discouraged if it takes you a few months or more before becoming pregnant. Also, studies report higher pregnancy rates with two inseminations per cycle compared to only one insemination.
In vitro fertilization (IVF)
Some gay women may choose to get pregnant with IVF. IVF success rates are higher per cycle when compared to IUI, but it is a much more expensive and complex procedure with increased risks for side effects and complications.
Below, we share IVF success rates, by age group, as reported in 2010. These rates show the percentage of women that gave birth following IVF. The first group of IVF success rates shows success rates for women that used fresh embryos and the second group shows success rates for women that used frozen embryos.
IVF success rates with fresh embryos
- Women under 35: 42 %
- Women 35-37: 32 %
- Women 38-40: 22 %
- Women 41-42: 12 %
- Women 42: 4 %
IVF success rates with frozen embryos
- Women under 35: 39 %
- Women 35-37: 35 %
- Women 38-40: 29 %
- Women 41-42: 21 %
- Women 42: 15 %
You can see that younger women often higher chances of pregnancy success with IVF.
Success rates for gay male parents are pretty simple. Surrogacy arrangements are often chosen by gay men. Gay men choosing surrogacy often see great success rates; 90 percent of surrogates achieve pregnancy by the second or third try. See the results for insemination above if you are going that route with your surrogate. If you are choosing IVF for your surrogacy arrangement, see success rates for IVF above.
